Background of the Study

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) are among the most common and debilitating side effects experienced by cancer patients undergoing treatment (Rao et al., 2023). These symptoms not only affect the physical well-being of patients but also significantly impact their psychological health, quality of life, and adherence to treatment regimens (Singh et al., 2024). Nurse-led interventions are essential in managing CINV, as nurses are often the primary caregivers who monitor and provide the necessary interventions to alleviate symptoms. Such interventions may include the administration of antiemetic medications, nutritional guidance, patient education, and offering emotional support to cope with the distress associated with CINV (Barker et al., 2024).

Federal Medical Centre in Katsina State is one of the leading healthcare facilities providing cancer treatment, including chemotherapy. Nurses at the center play a crucial role in assessing patients for signs of nausea and vomiting and implementing interventions to mitigate these symptoms. This study will examine the role of oncology nurses in managing CINV through nurse-led interventions at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.

Statement of the Problem

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting can be severe enough to cause patients to discontinue or delay treatment, which can lead to poor prognosis and reduced quality of life. Although nurse-led interventions are vital in managing these symptoms, there may be variations in the effectiveness of the interventions or gaps in the practices at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State. This study aims to examine the nurse-led interventions employed for managing CINV and their impact on patient outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the nurse-led interventions for managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions in reducing the severity of nausea and vomiting among chemotherapy patients.

3. To identify the challenges oncology nurses face in managing CINV in chemotherapy patients.

Research Questions

1. What nurse-led interventions are employed for managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State?

2. How effective are these interventions in reducing CINV in chemotherapy patients?

3. What challenges do oncology nurses face in managing CINV in chemotherapy patients?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led interventions significantly reduce the severity of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in cancer patients.

2. There is a positive correlation between the type of nurse-led intervention and the reduction of CINV severity in chemotherapy patients.

3. Oncology nurses face significant barriers in managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on oncology nurses' interventions in managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State. Limitations include possible variability in patient responses to interventions and challenges in isolating the effects of nurse-led interventions due to the presence of other contributing factors.

Definitions of Terms

• Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting (CINV): Nausea and vomiting that occur as a result of chemotherapy treatment.

• Nurse-Led Interventions: Interventions managed and implemented by nurses, including medication administration, patient education, and emotional support.

• Oncology Nurses: Nurses specializing in the care of cancer patients, particularly in managing chemotherapy side effects.
